In a week of sad news comes word of the passing of another WFSE/AFSCME giant. Lois Masten, former WFSE staffer and wife of one-time Executive Director George Masten, passed away peacefully this morning (Nov. 15). The family is comforting George.
Lois was devoted to the members and her family in the many jobs she did at WFSE. In addition, she was a major force in George's vibrant but unsuccessful 1988 run for State House in the 20th District.
Word has reached us from former Exec. Dir. Gary Moore and former Dep. Dir. Mark Brown that Larry Goodman, the WFSE director of personnel boards and later field services from 1967 to 1996, died over the weekend.
Charlene Hunt, a former Labor and Industries activist and member of Local 443 in Tumwater who helped overturn the ban on state employee raffles to raise money for charities, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. She was 68.
Char Hunt was a workers’ compensation adjudicator at L&I in 2007 when she and other L&I members culminated three years of hard work on the raffle bill.
We’re pleased to report that Melinda Brockie, the Federation member shot and wounded in the Las Vegas tragedy came home to the Lummi Reservation in Northwest Washington Oct. 25.
She was honored with a parade and a police escort from the Bellingham International Airport to her home, according to the Bellingham Herald.
