UW Medicine & Harborview Furlough Process and FAQs

Our union has negotiated a furlough agreement to help avoid layoffs and job losses. Here's what you need to know about the furlough process we have negotiated with UWMC and Harborview, should furloughs become necessary.

From November 25, 2020 to June 30, 2021, employees in certain job classes at UWMC may be required to take furloughs (see excluded classifications below).

Why will employees be required to take furloughs? Due to staffing changes during the COVID-19 pandemic and new restrictions from the state, UW Medicine has determined that furloughs may become necessary as cases of COVID-19 continue to increase in our state. Read on for more important details.

Exempt Classifications
Certain specific classifications are exempted from voluntary and involuntary furloughs:

  • Custodian
  • Custodian Lead
  • Custodian Supervisor (1 and 2)
  • Supply Chain Technician 1
  • Supply Chain Technician 2
  • Supply Chain Technician Lead
  • Campus Security Officer
  • ED Registration
  • Clinical Engineering
  • Test Site Staff

Notice
The employer will provide seven (7) days’ notice of the date range for the furlough to employees, and will be in one week increments.

Employees will be given at least 48 hours’ notice that they must return to work.

Accrued Leave
All permanent, classified employees will receive the opportunity to use 8 hours per month of accrued leave time in order to maintain benefits.

Premium for Reassignment
A $4.00/hour premium will be paid to any employee reassigned to a different entity within UW Medicine and any HA or MA reassigned to a UW COVID testing site (including mobile sites).
