WA Federation of State Employees Calls for Peaceful Transition of Power, Denounces Attacks on Public Service Workers

Violent insurrection provoked by president follows harassment of Washington public employees working to enforce public health orders

Olympia, Wash. – The Washington Federation of State Employees (AFSCME Council 28) Executive Committee released the following statement regarding the armed attack on the U.S. Capitol and the grounds of the Governor’s mansion in our state’s capital:

The violent attack on the U.S Capitol and Washington Governor’s mansion undermines basic American values of democracy, freedom, civility and decency. Today’s attacks on our democracy are part of a string of anti-government, anti-science, and anti-health actions aimed at public servants. These actions have been provoked by the president and other ill-willed politicians. These attacks must stop.
For more than a month, WFSE members have faced harassment and threats simply for doing their jobs and working to keep the public safe during a global pandemic. The members of our union will not let mobs who use terror, fear, and intimidation get in the way of their commitment to public service. Those working inside these buildings are our true heroes who protect our democracy, communities, and families.
The American people have spoken, and these shameful acts must not distract us from today’s victory for working people. President-elect Joe Biden will take office on January 20—and thanks to Georgia voters—a more pro-worker Senate brings hope, promise, and true democracy to all American workers.
